Something is happening in Leipzig! Onyon delivers another stellar LP with Pale Horses, a heavily songwriting-forward record teeming with earworm-y hooks. This crew doesn’t rely on overwrought arrangements, but rather abide by the German tradition of locking into a single groove and building on it.
The linear, motorik rhythm engine drives the band as they build the melody and personality around the central rhythms by adding harmonious vocals, sporadic percussion, and other oddball instrumental flourishes. This music has a beautiful simplicity, reminiscent of The Velvet Underground or ESG. That said, there is plenty of dynamic range in the album from song to song.
To escape the loud and chaotic world, we must embrace the power of the Onyon.
