Dollar Brand: African Marketplace

Celebrating the life and legacy of a true musical legend, SAMP Records presents the remastered vinyl release of Dollar Brand’s (Abdullah Ibrahim) seminal African Marketplace. Renowned worldwide as a master of jazz and a towering figure in South African music, Ibrahim’s early career was highlighted by co-founding the pioneering Jazz Epistles alongside Hugh Masekela and Kippy Moeketsi, before performing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra after being discovered by Ellington in 1962. Blending euphoric South African social music, a blues-based pianism influenced by Ellington and Monk, and a deep revival of indigenous African traditions, Ibrahim crafts music that is inextricably tied to the spirit and liberation struggles of South Africans.

The album seamlessly weaves these influences into a vibrant sonic collage, juxtaposing traditional African rhythms, spirituals, and Islamic motifs with European chordal harmonies. Effortlessly connecting quiet reflection with collective joy, the performances move fluidly between street-band vitality, transcendent grace, and rhythmic celebration.

Lovingly remastered from the original master tapes and housed in a beautifully crafted reverse-board cover, this pressing honours the deep heritage of these recordings while delivering an exceptional listening experience.
