Donovan, Mike: Exurbian Quonset (Vinyl LP)
One of the architects of the SF rock scene around the turn of this century, Mike played around town with a bunch of groups before forming Sic Alps. After their ballyhooed run, he’s made his music – next-phase roots-pop, soaked in the traditional waters of rock and roll and passed through a thrilling variety of after-punk sonic sieves – on a few solo albums and a few more with The Peacers.
Holed up in the far-flung Quonset of his mind, Sic Alps’ Mike Donovan is free to beam his haunted falsetto on waves of ripping feedback into the yawning spaces of the lo-fi (but ever-expandin') rock and roll project universe. A craftsman, he casts his classic bubblegum ditties in shades of dream-strewn gray, an arrested envelopment of glitter rock/metal machine music for the DAC age.
