As a crowned High Chief of his Igbo village, he is arbiter of his community. He also rejoices in expanding Nigeria’s energetic Christian music scene. The man is not in hiding. William Onyeabor is a powerful man and yet he chooses to remain a mystery. It is as if Onyeabor, in the prime of his force, has chosen to forget the work of his youth…the stinging Afro-funk; tickly wah-wah; searing jazz synth keyboard; runs suggesting spaceships leading into helium-voiced choruses singing in a jingle-jangle; tuning from the faraway stars; and that particular nostalgic sound found when the first electronic drum machines arrived to tantalize drummers everywhere.

While most artists whose music has been obscured feel validated to have their work re-issued, Onyeabor imposed an obstacle to surmount for this anthology to exist. The regime had been infuriated by Fela’s exposés of army and police violence on 1974’s Alagbon Close, 1975’s Kalakuta Show and 1976’s Ikoyi Blindness, but its anger was as nothing compared to that stoked by Zombie. In the lyric, Fela ridicules the men in uniform. "Attention! Quick march! Slow march! Salute!" he sings, "Fall in! Fall out! Fall down! Go and kill!" Each phrase is followed by the women singers’ taunt, "Zombie!" Fela continues: “No brains, no job, no sense joro jara jo; tell am to go kill joro jara jo; tell am to go quench joro jara jo.” On February 18 1977, the army would take their revenge: 1000 soldiers surrounded Kalakuta Republic, battered their way in and burnt it to the ground, beating any occupant they could catch, including Fela – and his 77 year old mother, who was thrown out of a second floor window, an outrage which caused her death the following year. (See the essay Music Written In Blood elsewhere on this site). Originally released by Coconut.

Zombie: Fela in his life time was never ‘a good bed-fellow’ of the military institution. As a political activist, he believed the army should operate under the mandate of a civil government. If national interest compels the armed forces to intervene in government, the army is obliged to hand over power to a new civil government elected by the people and enjoying their mandate. To do otherwise is to usurp power particularly since a soldier’s duty is not to seek a political mandate. For emphasis in the song, he narrates the military in motion comparing their orientation to the Zombie, without minds of their own. Fela paid a big price for this bold condemnation of the military institution. One thousand members of the Nigerian army attacked and burnt down his house after the release of the record. The tribunal set up to investigate the cause of the attack as a result of the public out-cry against the army, heard, as part of the evidence presented, an example of the Zombie album cover with the military uniform and boots displayed boldly. The army justification of the attack was that Fela treated the military institution with levity.

Mister Follow Follow: Mr. Follow Follow is about those who allow themselves to be led blindly by others. Since nobody can live in isolation, Fela sings about those who follow with their eyes wide open and those who follow with their eyes closed. Saying if you have to follow, it is better to follow with your eyes and ears open. For if you follow blindly, you will always remain in the dark: ‘…if you dey follow them book! Na inside cupboard you go quench!…cockroach dey! Rat dey!…na inside darkness you go dey! Mdou pays homage to one of his heroes Abdallah Ag Oumbadagou, the legendary Niger musician and political revolutionary, on songs “Ya Habibti” and “Layla”. “Abdallah was a contemporary of Tinariwen and helped to pioneer the sound of Tuareg guitar music blended with drum machines and electronic sounds”.

Afrique Victime sounds and feels like a Tuareg hand reaching down from the sky, and we are very lucky for this chance to get lifted.

Chismiten

Taliat

Ya Habibti

Tala Tannam

Untitled

Asdikte Akal

Layla

Afrique Victime

Bismilahi Atagah

The poems of iconic 19th century American writer Emily Dickinson crafted into the esoteric sounds of Josephine Foster. Over recent centuries, colonialism has seen the Tuareg’s ancestral territory partitioned into distinct countries – Mali, Algeria, Libya, Niger. This drawing of borders has turned the Tuareg into ishumar, a displaced people in search of a homeland lost to them. Tinariwen’s music – a blend of West African traditional music and electrified rock’n’roll – speaks directly to this feeling of longing: a sound that critics have called “desert blues”.

Le Chant Des Fauves

Nar Djenetbouba

Imidiwaren

Zin Es Gourmeden

Afours Afours

Tessalit

Kedou Kedou

Mataraden Anexan

Bismillah

Tin-Essako)

Ham Tinahghin Ane Yallah

The Ethiopiques Series has been celebrating vintage Ethiopian music since 1997, spanning over 30 volumes on CD and several vinyl releases.

A few years ago the world discovered a unique sound coming from the distant Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba. Instead, the final body compiled for this record consists of some – at least for us – nichey pearls and often overlooked artists; resulting in a diverse range of styles from Egyptian organ funk, disco sounds from Morocco, an example of the lively reggae scene of Libya, political songs from Lebanon, soundtrack music from Algeria, a musical union between Kenya and Oman, and much more.

The photo we chose for this cover somehow could be seen as an allegory of the sounds we feature on the label. It depicts Algerian composer Ahmed Malek at an ice cream bar during his stay in Japan for the World Expo in Osaka, 1970. He later said that his visit to Japan and especially the manga culture left a distinctive mark on the way he created his own compositions. With this in mind, it feels as a suiting visual representation for the music on this compilation.

Douaa - Haditouni

Magdy Al Husseini - Music De Carneval

Fadoul - Ahl Jedba

Sal Davis - Qaboos

Munir Khauli - Heik Ha Nishtghil?

Ouiness - Zina

Najib Alhoush - Ya Aen Daly

Zohra - Badala Zamana

Ahmed Malek - Casbah

Ait Meslayen - El Fen

Hamid El Shaeri - Reet

Ibrahim Hesnawi - Tendme

Tony Benn Feghaly - Free Blow (Dub Version)

Various Artists: Angola Soundtrack 2 - Hypnosis, Distortion & Other Sonic Innovations 1969-1978 (Vinyl 2xLP)

In 2010, against all odds, Angola Soundtrack Vol.1 was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize in the category 'Black music'. This victory was all the sweeter for its triumph over the predicted winner, Aloe Blacc ́s multi platinium record, 'Good Things'.

Many were surprised that the award was handed to a compilation that covered obscure music, but it didn't surprise the team behind Analog Africa who believed such acclaim should have come much earlier. Since discovering the music of Angola 15 years ago, styles such Kazucuta, Rebita and Semba have become an addiction for Samy Ben Redjeb, the compiler, who proclaimed a serious warning in the first edition liner notes: 'Listening to these tracks may cause addiction and provoke heavy rotation!'

The unique blend of incomparable musicianship, passionate delivery and regional rhythms that make these tracks so combustible are no accident. An exceptional set of circumstances existed in the history of Angola before Independence that created the giant leap in the style and standard of bands and recordings of the time.

When Portuguese repressive measures prevented the small Turmas, street musician groups, from being able to perform in Carnaval celebrations in 1961, a Portuguese civil servant, entrepreneur and Angolan music fan named Luis Montês was already in a position to capitalise on Luanda's need for a live music scene. His self- designed 'Kutonocas', Sunday afternoon live music festivals, delighted a Luandan population hungry for a communication between the city and musseques (townships). It also forced groups to adapt to a different style of playing that would accommodate large stages and broader audiences. They equipped themselves with electric guitars, and fed on the musical influences from Cape Verde, Congo and the Dominican Republic, while staying patriotically true to their own musical legacy and unique rhythms.

The intimacy of those participating in this musical revolution meant they playfully and professionally wanted to trump each other's style; communication between the groups was frequent as everyone studied each other's records and concerts and players were under a lot of pressure to outdo each other due to the limited recording and performing opportunities. Development of skill and ingenuity was a must, as well as addressing the highly politicised climate. The optimism of Independence can be heard in these recordings; a common goal between the audience and musicians.

Upon reading the characteristically generous liner notes of this new Analog Africa release, you will be given more hints of the crucial melting pot that allowed this short period to have such an outstanding productivity. Featuring 44 pages acquired in coordination with the National Library of Luanda and the art magazine 'Note E Dia', Analog Africa head honcho Samy Ben Redjeb has managed to collect newspaper clips, extremely rare pictures of the bands on stage and printed interviews from the 70s.

The stunning pages of passionate photography and artistic design also include interviews with many of the original artists and their families, biographies of the three labels that made it all possible, and of Luis Montês, who was the pulse of the live music scene in Luanda. This compilation is a dedication to the short lived recording industry in Angola, a brief moment of history between 1969 and 1978 in which three recording companies produced approximately 800 records, mostly singles. They are rare jewels, each song with a significant story and feel behind it. It is a breathing, pulsing, emphatic beat, and the modernised version of this local music, created by Mestre Cupijó, has been igniting street parties and traditional festivals across the state of Pará in Northern Brazil for decades. And at last in 2014, the combustible sound of Siriá will be celebrated internationally as the feverish, tropical sound of the summer!

Foretelling his talent to flow between cultures, Cupijó was named after the local river where he was born into a family of musicians. His father, Mestre Vicente Castro, was also known as Mestre Sicudera, the musical director of one of Brazil´s oldest bands, Eutepe Cametaense. Eutepe Cametaense, formerly directed by Cupijo’s grandfather, was founded in 1874, arguably making them the oldest band in Pará, and possibly in Brazil. They had the heritage and recognition of being the only band that performed at the festivities that signaled the end of slavery in Pará in 1888. Cupijo would later adopt this band and it’s players after his father, as his birthright.

At 12, Cupijó started to play the clarinet. He also became proficient at the piano, mandolin and guitar, although the instrument that came to personify his sound was the alto saxophone. Waltz, bolero, cha cha cha and an assortment of dance hall music became part of Cupijó's repertoire, but it was Carimbó and Siriá, the music played by the black communities of Pará, that had the strongest impact on the young musician.

To grasp the soul of this music, Cupijó went to its source and lived with the quilombolas (maroon) community of the Amazon. Upon his return, enriched by this life-changing experience, he founded the band 'Jazz Orquestra os Azes do Ritmo' with the goal of reinventing Siriá and modernising Samba de Cacete, Banguê and other folkloric music of the state of Pará. Airwaves from the Caribbean and Latin America had also brought the cumbia sound of the mighty Colombian orchestras, Merengue from the Dominican republic and Cuban music to the Amazon, all of which had an impact on the music of Northern Brazil, Mambo especially! Mestre Cupijó took these influences and mixed them in with the ingredients he had studied in the Quilombos. That fusion - as we are witnessing on this record - had explosive effects.

His fresh new sound became the soundtrack to Cametá's legendary Carnival and soon his troupe were invited to other festivals along the river. Transportation to these concerts was via small boats, where three or four musicians would share a vessel with their instruments tucked between their legs. In those days there were no posters or radio adverts to promote the shows in any way, yet Cupijó's shows became notorious. In an interview one of his band members explains: 'Whenever there was a party - on a Saturday for example - and it was known that Mestre Cupijó would play, the news would spread incredibly fast, just by word of mouth. We didn't understand how that was possible, but it certainly was amazing.'

After the initial wave of enthusiasm, the first two LPs were recorded with rudimentary equipment in a dance club in Cametá. However, it was the third attempt, recorded in a studio in Belém, which would trigger a phenomenal success. 'Caboclinha Do Igapo' and 'Mambo do Martela', included on this record, became instant hits. A year later, 'Mingau de Açai', one of Cupijo´s most popular tunes, took the region by storm. In total six LPs were recorded by Mestre Cupijó.

He then created 'Concurso de Musicas Carnavalesco de Compositores Cametaenses', a contest for carnival music composers. The songs composed expressly for these contests in the 70s are still performed today during carnival season. In addition to evolving the Pará music culture in this way, he also owned a makeshift soundsystem, 'Musicolor', to spin the discs of local artists before his own shows to the frenzied crowds. Mestre Cupijó proved himself a philanthropist as well as a conductor for the people's music, and acted as a provisional lawyer for the city of Cametá, specialising in help for the poor. Every neighbourhood of Cameroon´s capital, no matter how dodgy, was filled with music spots but surprisingly there were no infrastructure to immortalise those musical riches. The country suffered from a serious lack of proper recording facilities, and the process of committing your song to tape could become a whole adventure unto itself. Of course, you could always book the national broadcasting company together with a sound engineer, but this was hardly an option for underground artists with no cash. But luckily an alternative option emerged in form of an adventist church with some good recording equipment and many of the artists on this compilation recorded their first few songs, secretly, in these premises thanks to Monsieur Awono, the church engineer. He knew the schedule of the priests and, in exchange for some cash, he would arrange recording sessions. The artists still had to bring their own equipment, and since there was only one microphone, the amps and instruments had to be positioned perfectly. It was a risky business for everyone involved but since they knew they were making history, it was all worth it.

At the end of the recording, the master reel would be handed to whoever had paid for the session, usually the artist himself..and what happened next? With no distribution nor recording companies around this was a legitimate question. More often then not it was the french label Sonafric that would offer their manufacturing and distribution structure and many Cameroonian artist used that platform to kickstart their career. What is particularly surprising in the case of Sonafric was their willingness to take chances and judge music solely on their merit rather than their commercial viability. The sheer amount of seriously crazy music released also spoke volumes about the openness of the people behind the label.

But who exactly are these artists that recorded one or two songs before disappearing, never to be heard from again? Some of the names were so obscure that even the most seasoned veterans of the Cameroonian music scene had never heard of them. A few trips to the land of Makossa and many more hours of interviews were necessary to get enough insight to assemble the puzzle-pieces of Yaoundé’s buzzing 1970s music scene. We learned that despite the myriad difficulties involved in the simple process of making and releasing a record, the musicians of Yaoundé’s underground music scene left behind an extraordinary legacy of raw grooves and magnificent tunes.

The songs may have been recorded in a church, with a single microphone in the span of only an hour or two, but the fact that we still pay attention to these great creations some 50 years later, only illustrates the timelessness of their music.

Africa Iyo - Jean-Pierre Djeukam

Sie Tcheu - Joseph Kamga

Ma Wde Wa - Los Camaroes

Esele Mulema Moam - Los Camaroes

Yondja - Ndenga Andre Destin et Les Golden Sounds

Odylife - Damas Swing Orchestra

Quiero Wapatcha - Charles Lembe et Son Orchestra

Song Of Love - Louis Wasson et L´Orchestre Kandem Irenée

Les Souffrances - Tsanga Dieudonne

Monde Moderne - Pierre Didy Tchakounte et les Tulipes Noires

Moni Ngan - Willie Songue et Les Showmen

Mezik Me Mema - Mballa Bony

Mayi Bo Ya? - Johnny Black et Les Jokers

Ma Fou Fou - Pierre Didy Tchakounte

Woman Be Fire - Lucas Tala

Ngamba - Ndenga Andre Destin et Les Golden Sounds

Originally released in 1965 and unavailable on vinyl since 1967, Frost and Fire, A Calendar Of Ritual and Magical Songs, was the debut album from the then new group on the folk scene.

Originally from Hull, two sisters, Norma and Elaine (or 'Lal'), their brother, Mike and cousin, John Harrison, had been singing family songs all their lives and as a new folk group had been attracting attention for their powerful and exciting performances.
