That is their mission. The five-piece band was formed to continue a pilgrimage that began in the early 70s when founder members Pete Holidai and Steve Rapid were both in the Radiators From Space, the punk group they started with the late, great Philip Chevron back in the heady days of 1976. They wanted to blend the hi-energy rock they loved with a strong flavour of powerful pop music and elements of art-rock. They have not wavered from that path and continue to explore the realms of primal, punk-inspired rock that never loses sight of a memorable hook and a strong melody.

The band – named after the third Radiators From Space album, acknowledging the past while setting the tone and attitude for future endeavours – is completed by Johnny Bonnie on drums, guitarist/vocalist Tony St Ledger and bassist Bren Lynott.

Their debut album, Dark Shadows And Rust, is testament to a continued commitment to do it their way and to connect with like-minded pilgrims of all ages.

Snake Oil Carnival

Animal Gang Blues

Instant Polaroid

Death Ballad

Queen Of Heartache

Reach Out

Long Way To The Sun

Dearly Beloved

The Velvet Tongue

Sex In A Cheap Hotel

The Great Divide

First released in 1978 on Small Wonder Records, and later re-released on the band's own Crass Records, The Feeding of the Five Thousand showed Crass as an anti-establishment and highly uncompromising act, and one that would influence countless people, bands and activists.

The record came to be made when Pete Stennett, owner of Small Wonder Records, heard a demo that the band had recorded. Opening with a stunning rendition of 'The Most Exalted Potentate Of Love', this set presents The Cramps in all of their sleazy glory. The guitar interplay of Poison Ivy and Kid Congo Powers, along with Lux Interior's cheerfully sneering vocals and Nick Knox's relentlessly pounding drumming, elevates these songs far from the world of novelty into which they could easily have sunk.

Ivy's searing lead guitar is the highlight of 'You've Got Good Taste', which is dedicated to 'all you Gucci bag carriers out there'. Among the added bonus tracks are a version of the extremely obnoxious 'She Said', with very different, and apparently improvised, spoken-word verses, and 'Surfin' Dead', a slow-tempo twist, recorded in the studio, with heavily echoed guitars. The latter contains a prime example of Cramps-style double entendres (along with a borrowed lyric from 'New Kind Of Kick', an early track by the band). The little-remarked-upon ability of the rhythm section to kick out some ass-shaking jams spikes up such great numbers as "Nub," which almost predicts Rocket From the Crypt down to the gang-shout vocals, and the slower but no-less-compelling grind of "Rodeo in Joliet" (also one of the band's most inspired titles). Denison's guitar playing seemed a touch more focused at points here, the results almost suggesting such post-punk groove monsters as Gang of Four and even the Pop Group.

There's a more evident melodic lead role for his work as well, as the just plain great riff that fires up "Mouth Breather" and his near-countryish twang on "Karpis" makes perfectly clear. Yow, meanwhile, steps ever more into his own persona, his lyrics now downright comprehensible and his singing levels a touch less doom- (and bass) heavy, if no less aggrieved. The staggered vocal overdubs on "Monkey Trick" are a standout, especially when Denison suddenly serves up another one of his surprisingly sweet passages as a bed.

Other treats on the album include the opening "Here Comes Dudley" - in context one of the more non-welcoming greetings around - and the Morricone-tinged freakout of "Lady Shoes", assuming Morricone scored movies about doctors dealing with some freaky female patients. The whole album seems like a party in hell, not to mention demonstrative proof that there's still plenty of fun to be had with a basic rock lineup; it's all in the matter of how it's handled.

Then Comes Dudley

Mouth Breather

Nub

Seasick

Monkey Trick

Karpis

South Mouth

Lady Shoes

Rodeo In Joliet

A limited edition 10” 4 track EP on transparent 140 gram vinyl, featuring “Cheree”, “I Remember”, “Cheree (Remix)” and “Keep Your Dreams” (an early version of “Dream Baby Dream”).
