Elsewhere, Young frequently referred to drug use and used phrases that might have described his friends, such as the chorus of \"Tired Eyes,\" \"He tried to do his best, but he could not.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePerforming with the remains of Crazy Horse, bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, along with Nils Lofgren (guitar and piano) and Ben Keith (steel guitar), Young performed in the ragged manner familiar from \u003cem\u003eTime Fades Away\u003c\/em\u003e -- his voice was often hoarse and he strained to reach high notes, while the playing was loose, with mistakes and shifting tempos. But the style worked perfectly for the material, emphasising the emotional tone of Young's mourning and contrasting with the polished sound of \u003cem\u003eCSNY\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eHarvest\u003c\/em\u003e that Young also disparaged. He remained unimpressed with his commercial success, noting in \"World On A String,\" \"The world on a string\/Doesn't mean anything.\" In \"Roll Another Number,\" he said he was \"a million miles away\/From that helicopter day\" when he and CSN had played Woodstock. And in \"Albuquerque,\" he said he had been \"starvin' to be alone\/Independent from the scene that I've known\" and spoke of his desire to \"find somewhere where they don't care who I am.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSongs like \"Speakin' Out\" and \"New Mama\" seemed to find some hope in family life, but \u003cem\u003eTonight's The Night\u003c\/em\u003e did not offer solutions to the personal and professional problems it posed. It was the work of a man trying to turn his torment into art and doing so unflinchingly. Depending on which story you believe, Reprise rejected it or Young withdrew it from its scheduled release at the start of 1974 after touring with the material in the U.S. and Europe. In 1975, after a massive CSNY tour, Young at the last minute dumped a newly recorded album and finally put \u003cem\u003eTonight's The Night\u003c\/em\u003e out instead. It was, however, in New York in the ‘60s that Moses made his greatest bid to find the solo fame he desired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoses began working there as a session player, even playing frequently with a pre-fame Jimi Hendrix, but his close relationship with producer and Atlanta native Johnny Brantley eventually saw him getting his own break via a series of 45s in 1967 – most notably with covers of Joe Simon’s “My Adorable One”, The Four Tops’ “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” and The Beatles’ “Day Tripper”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was 1971 before Moses’ dream of being at stage front was realised, when he released his Brantley-produced LP \u003cem\u003eTime And Place\u003c\/em\u003e for Maple Records. Recorded with a band including members of The Ohio Players and Moses’ own backing group The Deciples, it was, nonetheless, Moses himself whose star quality shone through, via his scratchy guitar riffs, his throat-ripping vocals and the stirring mood that permeates the LP’s heady mix of funk, soul and R\u0026amp;B.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe LP did no business, and Moses’ dream quickly crumbled. Though details on his life are scarce, it’s believed he fled New York disenchanted with the music industry, feeling he’d been double-crossed by Brantley both in credit and remuneration for the countless records he’d played on. Back in Atlanta, Moses returned to playing the clubs, married twice, and fell into depression and drug dependency. He died in 1997 at the age of 56.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eTime And Place\u003c\/em\u003e soon became a much-sought-after item for collectors, and its cult has continued to grow over the years.
